How We Test Robot Mowers
Our Testing Methodology
At Yard Trails, we buy every mower we review. No loans, no sponsorships, no manufacturer-provided units. This means our evaluations are truly independent — we have no incentive to favor any brand.
Each mower goes through a multi-week testing protocol on real yards with varied terrain, grass types, and weather conditions. Here's exactly what we evaluate and how.
Cutting Quality
We assess the quality of cut across multiple dimensions:
- Height uniformity — We measure grass height at 20+ points across the mowed area using a ruler and compare to the set height. Deviations over 5mm are flagged.
- Edge precision — We photograph boundaries before and after mowing to measure how close the mower cuts to edges, flower beds, and obstacles. Edge offset is measured in centimeters.
- Stripe patterns — For mowers that claim stripe capability, we photograph results from above and at an angle to assess pattern visibility.
- Clipping distribution — We check for clumping, windrows, and even dispersal of clippings across the mowed surface.
- Multi-grass performance — Where possible, we test on different grass types (Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, bermuda) and note any differences in cut quality.
Navigation & Mapping
Navigation determines how efficiently and completely a mower covers your yard:
- Coverage completeness — After a full mow session, we photograph the yard from multiple angles and mark any uncut patches. We report coverage as a percentage of total lawn area.
- Boundary accuracy — We measure how closely the mower follows its programmed boundary, noting any excursions beyond the mapped edge.
- Obstacle handling — We place standardized test objects (shoes, garden tools, pet toys) on the lawn and observe detection distance, response behavior, and whether the mower resumes its path cleanly.
- Multi-zone transitions — For mowers that support multiple zones, we test zone-to-zone navigation including dock return and re-deployment.
- GPS/RTK accuracy — We compare the mower's reported position to a known reference point and measure drift over time, especially under tree canopy.
Slope Performance
Hills separate capable mowers from toys:
- Measured grade testing — We use a digital inclinometer to measure actual slope grades and test each mower on 15%, 30%, 45%, and (where rated) 60%+ inclines.
- Wet vs. dry traction — Every slope test is repeated on damp grass to simulate morning dew and post-rain conditions.
- Cutting quality on slopes — We measure height uniformity on inclines, since many mowers cut unevenly when tilted.
- Return-to-dock reliability — After mowing a hilly section, does the mower navigate home reliably? We track success rate over 10+ sessions.
Battery & Runtime
We verify manufacturer claims against real-world performance:
- Actual runtime — We measure from full charge to dock return, noting the percentage of battery remaining when the mower decides to return.
- Coverage per charge — We calculate actual square footage mowed per charge cycle and compare to the manufacturer's claim.
- Charge time — Timed from empty to the mower's reported full charge.
- Recharge-and-resume — For mowers that support it, we verify the mower correctly resumes from where it left off after recharging.
- Cold weather impact — When testing extends into cooler months, we note any runtime reduction below 50°F.
App & Smart Features
The companion app is how you'll interact with your mower daily:
- Setup experience — We time and document the full setup process from unboxing to first mow, noting any pain points.
- Scheduling — We test schedule creation, modification, and reliability over multiple weeks.
- No-go zones — We create no-go zones of varying sizes and shapes and verify the mower respects them.
- Notifications — We check that error alerts, mow completion notices, and maintenance reminders arrive promptly.
- Smart home integration — Where supported, we test Alexa, Google Assistant, and HomeKit integration for basic commands.
- OTA updates — We note how frequently the manufacturer pushes firmware updates and whether they improve real-world performance.
Build Quality & Durability
A mower needs to survive seasons of outdoor use:
- Weather resistance — We leave mowers in their docks during rainstorms and verify operation afterward. IPX ratings are noted but not taken at face value.
- Blade longevity — We track blade condition over the testing period and note when performance degrades enough to warrant replacement.
- Chassis and wheel condition — We inspect for cracks, wear, and UV degradation after weeks of outdoor exposure.
- Noise levels — We measure operational noise at 1 meter using a calibrated sound level meter and compare to the manufacturer's dB(A) claim.
Scoring
Each mower receives scores in six categories:

The weighted total produces our overall score out of 10. A score of 8+ earns our recommendation. A score of 9+ earns our "Best in Class" designation.
Our Commitment
We update reviews when manufacturers push significant firmware updates or when we accumulate enough long-term data to revise our assessment. Every review includes the firmware version tested and the date of last update.
